MUFFINS CELEBRATES 15 YEARS

The iconic Muffins lighting collection — a symbol of contemporary Czech glass design — celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this autumn. First unveiled to the public at Designblok in Prague in 2010, Muffins immediately captured attention and acclaim. The collection became not only a milestone in the history of BROKIS but also a springboard for the international careers of designers Lucie Koldova and Dan Yeffet.

The creation of Muffins was driven by the visionary approach of Jan Rabell, owner of Janštejn Glassworks, who in 2009 approached the design studio Olgoj Chorchoj. The studio then connected him with a young designer, Lucie Koldova, working in Paris at the atelier of world-renowned designer Arik Levy. The Parisian atmosphere, steeped in design culture and craftsmanship, became a key source of inspiration for the collection — today considered one of the defining works of modern Czech design.

‘The collection was conceived in France, where I was living at the time. It’s called Muffins, inspired by the delightful forms of French boulangeries. I was drawn to the union of glass and wood — two beautiful, natural materials.’ Lucie Koldova, 2010

‘The design by Lucie and Dan captivated me with its shape and story. Lucie’s presentation impressed me with its depth and complexity.’

After its successful debut in Prague, Muffins was introduced in 2012 at Galerie Bensimon in Paris, which presented the collection exclusively on the French market. It later appeared in prestigious venues, such as Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché, and featured in an eye-catching campaign in the Paris metro promoting the limited edition Muffins Tree.

Another major milestone came in 2013, when BROKIS exhibited independently for the first time at Maison & Objet, marking its official entry onto the international design stage.

10-Year Anniversary Edition

To mark the tenth anniversary in 2020, BROKIS introduced a special edition combining handblown glass with exceptional materials such as red marble, distinguished by its vivid crimson base and white-grey arabesque once used in churches and historic architecture.

Another material, grey marble from southern Italy, renowned for its delicate texture and subtle tonal variations, gave the collection a timeless and refined character.

15-Year Anniversary Edition

For this year’s 15-Year Anniversary Edition, Lucie Koldova, in close collaboration with BROKIS, has chosen a new noble material — Italian travertine. Used since antiquity and prized in modern architecture, travertine is valued for its natural texture with soft pores and earthy hues that harmonise beautifully with the clean contours of handblown glass.

The result is a sophisticated yet natural composition that gives Muffins a renewed aesthetic depth. Each piece is crafted with meticulous care — from the selection of sustainable materials to the precision of Czech glassmaking tradition refined over centuries.

The union of travertine and multilayered glass pays homage to this anniversary edition, ensuring that every piece is a distinctive original.

‘For me, Muffins represents the beginning of a new era for BROKIS and a source of inspiration for future collections and for an entire generation of designers,’ says Jan Rabell. ‘It’s become a true icon of Czech design, recognised on every continent and in over a hundred countries around the world. It appears in films and in remarkable buildings and interiors. After fifteen years, Muffins still holds its place — and its future.’
